July Meeting of 'Spending the Broadband Stimulus'

How the FCC's National Broadband Plan Will Affect Spending

BroadbandCensus.com presents the July meeting of the Broadband Breakfast Club on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at 8 a.m.

Speakers at the July 14 event will address the formation of the National Broadband Plan by the Federal Communications Commission, currently underway, and how it will impact federal broadband stimulus spending. This national broadband strategy was called for by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, passed February 17, 2009, and requires the FCC to devise its plan by February 17, 2010.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Paula Boyd, Regulatory Counsel, Microsoft
  • Michael Calabrese, Vice President, New America Foundation
  • Several additional speakers from industry and government have been invited

The event will be moderated by Drew Clark, Editor and Executive Director of BroadbandCensus.com.

Clark is a veteran telecom and technology journalist, and he founded BroadbandCensus.com in January 2008 as a means of providing the public with a free and objective resource of the wired and wireless local broadband carriers, grouped by ZIP code, by speed, by competition and by consumer satisfaction.

Telecommunications policy advocates, attorneys, policy-makers and journalists seeking to obtain insights from top officials in Washington can attend the Broadband Breakfast Club, which includes a full American and Continental breakfast, for as little as $45.00, plus a modest registration fee. The events are on the record and open to the public. Register here for the next breakfast event.

For individuals outside of Washington, or whose schedule doesn’t permit attendance in person, archived webcasts of the Broadband Breakfast Club are now available on the BroadbandCensus.com channel on TV Mainstream. One full year of online access to each premium webcast is available for $40.00.

Individuals who register to attend the Broadband Breakfast Club will also receive a full year of complementary online access to the webcast.

Beginning at 8 a.m., an American plus Continental breakfast is available upstairs in the spacious Piedmont Room. This is followed by a discussion, beginning shortly after 8:30 a.m. and ending by 10 a.m.

PLEASE NOTE: The Broadband Breakfast Club has moved to Clyde's of Gallery Place, at 707 7th Street NW, Washington, DC 20001. Conveniently located next to the Gallery Place Metro Station, on the Red and

BroadbandCensus.com is a free information and news service designed to help consumers, policy-makers and broadband providers know more about the availability, competition, speeds and prices of high-speed internet access at the local level.

The information and news that is available for free at BroadbandCensus.com is more important now than ever before. The FCC and Congress have just made important changes to how it will collect data from carriers.

Public and private sector groups of all stripes are demanding, ever more loudly, that government take steps toward a national broadband policy. That cannot be done without solid information about broadband.

Finally, many large carriers are beginning to implement plans to meter out bandwidth in tiers and with usage caps. This marketplace development makes the mission of an independent monitoring web service like BroadbandCensus.com even more critical. For more information, visit BroadbandCensus.com.

Together with Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Virginia Tech, BroadbandCensus.com sponsored the "Broadband Census for America Conference" that was held on Friday, September 26, 2008. Information about the conference is available at http://broadbandcensus.com/conference.
